Routed Jewelry Box

Post by SPalm »

The cherry drawers and tray are 1 inch thick, the top and bottom are 1/2 inch. The basic carcass is held together with five 1/4 inch dowels. Two are used as hinge pins for the drawers, and the other three are hidden inside the back. I made the back plate out of separate pieces to keep the assembly easier – dowels are so unforgiving. The drawers press against this back plate which allowed me to slightly sand the back of the drawers until they closed with just the front gap that I wanted. I used brass washers to separate the drawers. It all worked out quite nicely in the end.

I am posting the design file. Feel free to use or modify it if you want. I stripped out any special tabs and clean-up routing to keep it simple. You may want to modify the back plate concept to match your woodworking skills. I used a wooden hinge, but a lift off top would be nice also. The drawers work better with a finger grab and I used glue on walnut knobs for this, but there are lots of options.

Hey People,
The CRV file above is from Version 6.5, so I guess if you don't have that version you can not load it. Here are the DXF exports from my two main working layers.

The 'Large' layer contains the profile, pocket, and drill for the top, the top tray, and the bottom. The top is routed with just the profile. The top tray is routed with the profile and the pocket. The bottom is routed with the profile and the 5 drills. I drilled all the way through the bottom for ease of dowel insertion and then also used this as a manual drill template for drilling the bottom of the top tray with a drill press.

The small trays are routed, pocketed and drilled. They are routed two at a time for grain matching.

Just a thought. If you want a lift off lid, you could route a reverse pocket on the top's underside. This would create a indexing protrusion on the bottom of the top to keep it in place. Also the flat top is a perfect canvas for some VCarving.
