Free Project - "The Reader" Magazine Rack

Post by StuartH »

We are once again delighted to announce a FREE project created by Michael Tyler for Vectric.
"The Reader" Magazine Rack is ready to be produced and enjoyed by all Aspire 3 owners.

http://www.vectric.com/WebSite/Vectric/ ... e_rack.htm

This customizable project enables you to change the magazine rack's front and back cover text
with your own wording using Aspire 3's handy Text Tool and Distort Between Two Curves option.
By also using the "Project toolpath onto 3D model" option in the V-Carve/Engraving Toolpath form,
the v-carved text follows the 3D surface of the magazine pages!

Hi Rick,

With the free projects on offer, we try to alternate what software is required, dependent on the complexity of the design.

As highlighted below, you will see that one month the project will be for Aspire 3 users, then the next for Aspire 3 & VCarve Pro 6 users. We do try to ensure that both software users benefit from these free projects.

Aspire & VCarve Pro - Free Project - "Vintage Wooden Spoon Wall Rack"
Aspire - Free Project "The Tuscan Grape Clock" for Aspire!
Aspire & VCarve Pro - Free Project "The Paradise Box" for VCarve Pro & Aspire!

Very very nice, cannot wait to get out to the machine to make one of these.
Any idea as to what FONT is used for the text ?

Thank you, everyone! It was just another one of those ideas that "just popped in my head" one day. I had my wife take a photo of me holding a magazine and I modeled it from the photo. (So, those are actually MY hands!)

Stuart already mentioned we alternate projects between Aspire/VCarve Pro...one more to add to the list...The Mother's Day project (that one works for both Aspire 3 and VCP 6 owners too).

I just used Times New Roman (bold) and Arial, but you can use whatever font you wish!

At my age I'm not certain I will ever learn everything Aspire does... I cannot figure out how to edit the text on the magazine rack. Thanks in advance, Dale

Hi Dale,

On hindsight, I probably should have outlined the steps on how to make the text edits.

In this case, you do not edit the existing text directly. Rather, you type your new text, delete the text you want to replace. Here are the basic steps...

1) Type your new text using the "Text Tool"

2) Delete the existing text you want to replace (one section at a time)

3) Select your new text

4) With your new text still selected, hold down the "Shift" key and select the bottom rail AND the top rail

5) With these 3 items selected, click on the "Distort Selected Objects Tool" and then choose "Between Two Curves" from the Create Envelope menu

6) This will automatically force the text to "flow" between the two rails

7) At this point, you can manually edit the text "shape or flow" using the "node handles", if necessary

I hope that helps! You can repeat the procedure for each text element, as you wish. Don't be shy...please let us know if you have any more questions, and/or if the instructions are not clear enough (I'm responding from a condo in Florida while we are out of town, and I'm only on my first cup of coffee!).

Hi Michael, as I belong to the East Rand Woodworkers Association (ERWA) I modified the original.
Here are the pictures as promised. Our motto at the club is ENJOY LEARN SHARE and this was also incorporated. The back side is a bitmap I found on the internet.
Wood is VERY old pine planks I had lying around.
