Hi Phil...
I'll try my best to give you the steps.
First, it was a scan of a picture from a book.
The scan was converted to vectors, using 'potrace'.
The results were as in the "rings" picture, attached.
Then after "much" cleanup time, and remove of unwanted vectors, ended up with as in "rings02"
picture attached.
The 2 pictures that were posted before are of the same artwork. Just different objects were selected.
In the '01' , all the vectors were selected. In the '02', the one you asked about, only the inside vectors
were selected.
See a closeup in the attached "rings03" picture.
I hope this is somewhat clear. If not, ask again !!
Thanx

Sack of Ohs
Hi Paul.
the close up - sack of ohs 3.jpg really shows the necessary details. Did you have to close all of the partial circles individually? That would take a lot of time.
The project has a real 3-D look. Did you actually cut the file? This technique could be used to create Celtic knots.
Thanks for sharing your work.

Here’s another sundial I cut the other day. This one tells you the height of the sun off the horizon. The second picture is a shot of one of my quality control officers checking my work.

Thanks Brian and yes for George the quality control officer it's always mealtime or naptime.
Here's a close up of the dial in the last post and of a dial I finished today.
The yellow dial isn't for telling time (although it will) it's for finding true north. You line both dials up so they read the same time and the direction it's pointing is true north.

In between some other jobs I ran this one. It's for the back of a bookcase; it'll get mounted to the top of the bookcase. It was really easy to do with the new VCPro, took about 5 minutes to create. I picked a western font I had found someplace.
Stats: 90-degree 0.5inch V-Bit. Total size was about 19X6inches and it was just painted plywood. And man was the plywood crappy. Had a ton of voids in it. But the guy I made it for was happy so I'm happy.....
Seeing the picture in the garden makes me think I should look into making some garden signs.

Paint Mask
I bought some Avery paint mask, applied it, burnished it, cut out the graphics, painted it black, (with some missed days inbetween), and tried to peel it-- All I goe was a sticky residue left after barely being able to peel it off (actually I gave up and belt sanded it off).
I think I should have not left it on so long, but a looking for help or advice if anyone has any--this is a really great forum-- tons of helpful information and links-- thanks-- Jack

There is a max amount of time you can leave it on before it bonds with whatever it's on. I think it's 12-24 hours but I could be wrong. I normally get it off soon as the paints dry to the touch, but you have to be careful not to pull the paint off. Best if you can take it off while the paints wet but I have waited overnight to take it off before..
My bet would be you waited too long to take it off.

Brockadeau,
I've have used contact paper or a masking tape. When the tape or contact paper is pulled from the job. I aways use Bestine to remove the gummy residue. It won't harm or dissolve paint or plastics.

paint mask
You know it's always wise to do a sample first-- I'm glad I didn't mask off the two 4x8 sheets of extera mdf I have to cut for a customer--and leave it on for a week--There were no instructions with the mask--I was thinking maybe I should have applied some heat to help remove it, but time is probably the culprit here-- as well as the fact it was on a somewhat porous laquered surface (only 2 coats of laquer on mahogany mdf)-- and thanks for the info about the Bestine-- Never heard of it before, but I will get some to try out-- keep the tips comming, as I think they can help us all-- Jack
Hi all
I have removed mask within hours after painting and up to two days after. It was a great deal harder to remove even after only one day. One theory I have is because my finish is dry but not cured the finish is still out gassing. Maybe those vapors are combining with the glue to make it harder to remove. This is only a guess on my part and nothing more.
