Our new breakfast table

Post by hkellins »

I just completed this 45" diameter breakfast table
The compass is maple and walnut surrounded by mahogany.the outside border is wenge
Finshished with Rubio monocoat and Nano3 protective coat
This is the most complex piece I have ever made. It took 2 months to complete
I used vectric to create the templates for working out the design with mdf.
It was about 1/2 CNC work especially the curved wenge and 1/2 table saw and sanding (lots of sanding)
I learned so much from the process and am very pleased.

Did you use pore filler? If so, what type?

No pore filler was used. Lots of sanding smoothed everything out

When my uncle took possession of his very first '69 Corvette.....He carefully with everyone watching...
SCRATCHED the passenger door with the key. :shock: :shock: :shock:

He then said "It was going to happen someday...I saved the dread of waiting...and I'm not crying:) "

That GORGEOUS table reminds me of that. :)
WELL done!!

I'm guessing by the time factor, you went fairly quick to this project from your first thread:)

About 6 weeks altogether, once I have an idea and get it straight in my head things move along well.
I did do a couple design changes, the boss didn't like my designs. I was gonna do mother of pearl inlay on the wenge but that got poo pooed. Good call.
I made some rookie mistakes with grain direction and had to rip out one section of mahogany that I did wrong.
I pulled so many splinter out of my hands from wenge.
Here are some of the build photos. I learned a ton on this one.
Onto inlays, or maybe a desk.

Thanks VERY much for the "build" pics!
All too often we see only a "finish" pic...and at least I learn more from mistakes:)
Once again...CONGRATS!! :)
scott

BTW...When trimming out the house, my 3 carpenters made a joke about Wenge;

Doug;
"D**N!!! I got a Wenge splinter in my palm!!"

Paul;
"I'll grab the vise grips, and we'll pull it out through your elbow:)"
I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself
