VCarve Pro 3D Modeling rough edges

Post by RichGetto »

We are trying to 3D carve a shallow bowl from an imported STL file.

Main issue is that the outside carving on the bottom up towards the top is rough.

Here's the preview image of our first try which created a rough tall edge on the outside of the bottom:

We then adjusted the bottom limit plane to the maximum allowed which narrowed the rough edge band considerably:

Is there a way to carve the sides smoother up to the bowl's rim?

Since the rim appears to be vertical, you're running into the well-documented fact that the 3d carving toolpath will not carve vertical surfaces smoothly. This is a result of the way Vectric 3d objects are represented in the software. It's not a bug, it's an inevitable result of the pixel-based structure of Vectric 3d objects (but not 2d objects).

The best way to address this is probably to create a circle just a tiny bit smaller than the rim of the bowl and use it to create a 2d profile toolpath running around the rim to clean it up. You can also try importing it at a higher resolution, but that will only make the ridges smaller, not make them go away.

Probably the easiest way is to run a small profile cut around it, Vertical sides can be an issue for the software because it is pixel based
A lot will also depend on your import settings & the quality of the STL you are importing. Could you not just create that bowl in vcarve? Doesn't look to be a complex shape

dealguy11 types quicker than me   Mind you he also knows a lot more than I do

Try running a 2nd toolpath with the same but with Contour option REST machining. It helps the stuff I do and does not add a ton of time to the job.

Thank you all for all your helpful suggestions and ideas.

I learned a lot in this never ending CNC journey.

We are off to try another bowl incorporating what we have learned from all your guidance.

Have you watched this tutorial from one of the user group meeting, this is done using the clipart within the software so can be done with vcarve

Glad I could help, there are a few videos on Vectrics youtube channel about bowls but I am not sure how many of them are for Aspire users, that one I knew to be vcarve as well.
