Maple with Walnut and Yellow Heart inlay

Ron, that is absolutely beautiful. Me, coming from New Bedford which has been called the whaling capitol of the world, I really appreciate that scene.

I am a little in question though about the Maple, Walnut, Yellowheart woods used. As I look at and enjoy the work - I just do not "see" those woods. Can you point them out.

Leo, I see some colors in the compass rose labels. Also, I think "think" what looks black in the pic is probably the walnut.

Also, Leo, one of my favorite places to visit up there was the whaling museum in downtown New Bedford and have lunch over at Freestone's.

At any rate, a really, really nice piece of work!

The board is all end grain, the strips in the maple base are alternated to give the checker board pattern, it looks good if the base is a dark wood such as walnut, not sure I like it in a light timber such as maple.
The majority of the inlay is walnut end grain that has not been flipped and seems to give a better visual appearance, yes it does go almost black when the oil is applied.
The yellow heart I used in the compass, not happy with the NSEW as it blends into the maple should have left it as walnut, unfortunately you don’t see this until the board is in the finishing stage and to recut would be I think almost impossible and I didn’t want to take the chance of ruining the board.
The board is 38mm thick with a 6mm inlay.
My learning curve continues.

Ron I surely don't see a problem with your wood selections.
I personally like to be surprised when looking at a piece of art.
I like the shades of color in the compass design, to me it is
very eye catching look. By the way when I Blew up the compass
you get a close up of how tight your inlays fit.
Another fine piece work my friend. looking forward to seeing
what comes next !!!
