Easy Drawer Maker Gadget

Post by jimandi5000 »

Hello All,

I have added some new Joint types to the Easy Drawer Maker Gadget. Beyond the Dog Bone, I have added the Blind Dog Bone, T-Bone Joint, Blind T-Bone, Sniglet Joint and the Blind Sniglet. I also added a HTML format BOM (thank you jlavintx63) to the gadget.

This Version 4.3

Supports: 10.5 and up

Install
1. Download the gadget EasyDrawerMaker.zip that is attached to this post.
2. Rename it from EasyDrawerMaker.zip to EasyDrawerMaker.vgadget
3. In Vectric Pro or Aspire click on Gadgets -> Install Gadget and navigate to where you downloaded the file to, select it and click Ok.

It should give you a pop up saying the gadget was installed and you should see EasyDrawerMaker in the Gadgets menu.

Steps for Use:

1. Setup a new drawing with the proper material size
2. Run the EasyDrawerMaker gadget
3. Enter the proper values for the drawer opening, clearances, and the materials thickness for the drawer parts
4. Open the Project menu, select where to write the BOMs
5. Open the Milling menu, check the values and select the joint type
6. On the Main menu, select the tooling you use to mill the drawer parts
7. Press the OK button

Hello Sawmiller,

Well, I tested the code and you are correct, it need to be fix. I will work on it as soon as I complete updating then Easy Cabinet Maker gadget. I am making good headway and shouldn't take me too long.

Thanks for letting me know about this.

Have a great day!
:)
Thanks,
Jim

Jim!
Fantastic gadgets, the entire lot - and appreciate all the support and continued improvements!

In addition to the parts spanning across sheets (there's a workaround, as painful as it may be!) - there appears to be some type of issue with the pockets. Regardless of which bit is selected, I receive an error about the pocket paths, and when I try to edit them, I receive a "Toolpath contains invalid data" error message on v11.501 and v11.016. A little research on the forums related to other items and it seems maybe it's a compatibility issue between versions of Vcarve?

Thoughts?

I will take a look at this but as I recall in all my previous testing of this gadget "Toolpath contains invalid data" error message appears whenever an incorrect bit is used/called/input. I will check again to confirm. Thank you for letting us know about this potential issue.

Okay I believe I know where the problem may lay in this. The tool selection box for the Dado Pocket two toolpaths and I believe there may be a problem with the name structure here. It does not match the Vectric terminology. For instance Vectric calls "Pocket Clearing" as the HEAVY Clearing of the pocket and a "Profile" as the cleanup as a perimeter cleanup of the pocket. Where as in the gadget we have "Dado Pocket Bit" which is the CLEARING of the Pocket and "Dado Clearing Bit" as the perimeter cleanup. I also tend to lean in that the user may be mislead or confused as to which goes where because I certainly did when testing it (an admission ) . It was not until I familiarized myself with the gadget that I have learned which is which.

We, (Jim and I) will look at making this better!!!

I do so much testing I sometimes get confused. Scratch some of that last post!!!

Correction - AS For the Gadget Interface ---

Profile Bit --- Perimeter Cutout PROFILE BIT
Dado Pocket Bit - Is named pocket so as not to confuse with above and it is actually the PROFILE Cleanup (as with Vectric's naming sense)
Dado Clearing Bit - Is the actual CLEARING Bit of the Pocket (as with Vectric's naming sense)
Finger Bit - is the finger PROFILE CLEANUP
Finger Clearing Bit - is the Is the actual CLEARING Bit of the Fingers

After doing this I guess the easiest way to remember is "Clearing" means BIG BIT, HOGOUT, etc... (but this bit must also be of a size where it will fit the vector area it intends to carve).

Sorry for the confusion/mixup, etc...

Onward with more Beta Testing!!!

Makes sense, as I’m an old COBOL programmer myself :). I figured something like this may be going on, and threw a small bit 1/8” in all the positions as I recall, and still had the same error. I’ll do some more “testing” (more like fumbling around in the dark) in the morning.

Thanks!

So I've worked with this 7 ways to Sunday. It will place the drawer pieces (as denoted in an earlier post) on separate sheets, which is problematic but not insurmountable. However, once placed, if you recalculate all the toolpaths, everyone with a dado or finger fails, with a "invalid data" error message if you try to edit it. I've tried configuring those "clearance" pieces with everything from a 1/16" bit to a 1/2" bit just to see what types of responses I receive. While I can manage to resolve some of the invalid toolpaths (mostly the dados), no bit selection that I have will clear the finger errors. I've tried different joint types as well, thinking maybe it was a design issue, to no positive outcome.

Great gadget - love the design options. Happy to help/alpha test if there is interest. Appreciate all the hard work!

All these tools work as expected.

Try using tooling as noted here in this image.

I will be posting an updated Drawer Gadget soon which fixes the part thickness/sheet layouts. In the meantime try out the above tools.

Sharkcutup -
Appreciate the guidance. Could you take the above configuration and perform a "Recalculate All" on the toolpaths without error? I can recalculate them individually, without an error, but doing them all at once produces the following (with your sized tooling, using actual tools):
Recalculate ALL.jpg
If I go around to each sheet and recalculate the paths individually, they work fine. However, a "recalculate all" provides this error message, even on the ones I had previously recalculated individually. Nothing completely broken, but seems a bit odd and am curious if it behaves the same way for you.

Thanks for the followup.

Hello All,

1.) fixed the Part Thicknesses/Sheet layouts
2.) Standardized labeling of the Material Thickness of the Sheets.
3.) Standardized overall look of Milling Setting User Interface.

This Version 4.4

Supports: 10.5 and up

Install
1. Download the gadget EasyDrawerMaker.zip that is attached to this post.
2. Rename it from EasyDrawerMaker.zip to EasyDrawerMaker.vgadget
3. In Vectric Pro or Aspire click on Gadgets -> Install Gadget and navigate to where you downloaded the file to, select it and click Ok.

It should give you a pop up saying the gadget was installed and you should see EasyDrawerMaker in the Gadgets menu.

Steps for Use:

1. Setup a new drawing with the proper material size
2. Run the EasyDrawerMaker gadget
3. Enter the proper values for the drawer opening, clearances, the materials thickness and sizes for the drawer parts
4. Open the Project menu, select where to write the BOMs
5. Open the Milling menu, check the values and select the joint type
6. On the Main menu, select the tooling you use to mill the drawer parts
7. Press the OK button

To Work on NEXT:

Maybe adding a Bottom Styling Option (similar to the Tray Maker Gadget). Captive Bottom, Rabbeted Bottom, and Flat Bottom.
