Bit question

Post by Mike »

I just purchased Photocarve. Let me be the first to say, I have a lot to learn. Just wondering which bits you would recommend for carving in wood and possibly for lithophanes.

Hi Mike,

I use a 30 degree vee bit for lithophanes, single flute and it does the full cut in single pass.

I use a emeditor to remove the reduntant Z clearance moves and that saves a lot of time too :)
Cheers,

Hi Crocky
You mentioned an editor called Emeditor.
Where can I get the software.
Also, when I finish the carvings in wood do I need to apply
stain to make the image visible as I cannot make out the image
after carving.

Ed there are many different variations on finishing. Most I believe would use stain. If you choose to go that route you can brush it on and dab the excess of with a cloth, lightly sand with a sanding block and then use a steel brush to clean the veins out.

I like to wax the blank before I cut it then use spray paint and then a couple of runs thru the drum sander, clean with a brush and seal.
You will need to try the different methods discussed here to find the one you like the most. The basic goal is to have light and dark separation.

I have no idea what Emediter is, but I read here somewhere (or maybe it was CNCZone) that someone used Microsoft Word or Excel to do a "find and replace" function, so you would find all Z .250's and replace with Z whatever you want, BUT you need to have your first and last .250 safe moves in place otherwise.....................

Notepad or wordpad will find replace. These are standard on most computers.
HAPPY CUTTING
