Kitchen Island countertop
We have a kitchen cabinet island that had an old formica top. I bought a birch top from Home Depot, it wasn’t quite wide enough, so I added birch boards to the sides, which also covered the finger joints of the sides, which I never really liked to look at anyway. Since there were also some finger joints exposed on the ends, I decided to make breadboard ends out of cherry. I attached them with draw bored pegs, the two in the center are in holes the 4 to the outsides are in slots to allow for wood expansion and contraction. I left 3/8 to 1/2” for expansion on each side. Then the cherry was two face glued boards, to help hide the seam and add some visual interest just added a quick Celtic weave. Came out really nice, we just walk by and say wow all day. One day we might put something on it, lol.

Thanks all! The way this was packaged at the store, you couldn’t see the finger jointed edges. I might not have bought it if I saw them, lol.

Thanks Michael. Should mention I used General Finishes Seal-a-cel followed by 3 coats of GF Arm-R-Seal satin.

Bill...
Really nice job on the island cabinet. Nice touch with the celtic weave
it makes a nice finish to the ends of the cabinet. The finish is great.

Re: Kitchen Island countertop
Thanks Jay, I did a lot of the rest of the work with hand tools. There was a small radius on the side edges, I planed that off with a Stanley no. 5 before I glued on the side boards. Also planed the cherry and the side boards level with the top after assembly. So it took a while, but we love it.

Re: Kitchen Island countertop
Thanks Scott, still haven’t put anything on it, lol. Here’s a shot of the draw boring on the other end.
