Cryptex
Cryptex
The box is white oak. The compass rose is maple, cherry, and walnut. The cryptex itself is stabilized purpleheart and stabilized maple. The rings are two pieces with 26 half holes on the purpleheart and 1 half hole on the maple ring. To set the code, you rotate the outer ring to the position you want and insert a pin in the hole to set the letter for each ring. I have mine set to my wife's name, so "THE BOSS" cut into the lid is the clue for unlocking the cryptex.

Re: Cryptex
Amazing. Doing a Cryptex is on my bucket list.
I have the plans and I have transferred some of the plans to Aspire.
Now I need to set aside some time to finish that.

Re: Cryptex
Wiley,
What do you mean the purple heart and maple are “stabilized”? Vacuum resin treated?...or something else? (such as allowing wood to sit awhile before using it)

Re: Cryptex
Thanks yall it was fun to build. Michael, the parts were vacuum resin stabilized. I roughed them out first then stabilized and baked them. It keeps the thin maple rings from warping.

Re: Cryptex
Doesn't matter how long you've been on this forum, there's always something to learn. I do a lot of models from MDF, which is very weak and each time I tell myself I need to use something else. I've tried the Minwax wood harder, but that's just for the surface only. I'm going to buy the Vacuum Chamber Kit and other goodies that go with, which seems fairly cheap from Amazon. From the videos I've watch on YouTube, I think this would be a nice addition to my shop equipment. Thanks yall it was fun to build. Michael, the parts were vacuum resin stabilized. Re: Cryptex
I got them from a gentleman on Internet, he had done a Cryptex in steel and aluminum. I mailed him and asked for a copy of his design and I got a PDF in the mail.Phil wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 1:20 pmMike, where did you get the plans?mickecarlsson wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 7:24 pmAmazing.
