Text on a curve

Post by grey_justice »

Hi all, I'm trying to recreate a version of this clock as I like the way the digits hug an inner and outer circle.

I've tried to use the text on a curve and copy along vectors functions in VCarve Desktop but am struggling, any ideas how it can be done?

The key to doing this is 'Circular Copy'. Put a small dot at 12, then circular copy it 60x. Put a large dot at 12, then circular copy it 12x. Delete the 'extra' small dots from the hour positions. Now put a 'I' at the 12 o'clock position. Circular copy that 12 times. Now, go around to each numeral and change the text. You don't even have to close the text edit box. Just highlight the next numeral, and the previous one is saved.

i understand that to place text on a circle, you need to first cut the circle in half. how is that done? do you need to then join the 2 halves afterwards? thanks

Hi,

At Bookmark 5, the following video tutorial shows the procedure:

ok, cut the circle, applied my text, all went well: but the video does not show how to re-unite the two 1/2 circle vectors. i tried 'join vectors' and everything else i could think of, but no luck. i eventually just deleted the two 1/2 circles and drew a new circle around the text, but that created some alignment problems. how do you re-unite the two 1/2 circles please. thanks?

You shouldn't have had any problems re-joining the vectors, select them both right mouse click & select join/close selected vectors. You can also do it from the drop down menu under edit.
Another way would be to copy the circle before you cut it, cut the circle & do your text thing & then delete both half circles as you did when you couldn't join them. Now just go the the edit menu & select paste & you will get your original uncut circle back or at least a copy of it

To make the clock you pictured in your 1st post you do not need to use "Align Text To A Curve". Use the procedure outlined by Gkas. The diameter of the array copy is determined by the original position of the first number or tic mark and the center of rotation that is entered in the "Circular Copy" tool dialogue box.

Here's a link to a short video (no sound).
