Hi Phil,

The finer grits above 220 tend to “burnish” wood instead of sanding. Personally, I only purchase the 80-grit Discs now as I have learned I can control it very well and no longer need other grits. Of course, you will experiment yourself to see what works best for you!

Many years ago, I met the fellow who invented these and sanding discs when he worked for 3M. He told me they were originally intended for use on metal only. But, not long after they were on the market, hand-carvers discovered them and they quickly became popular for all manner of woodworkers too!

So, you don’t have to waste any of the finer grits that don’t properly sand wood. Those are dandy for removing rust and polishing metal items.

I will have to get some of them and try them out... I find cleanup can be the biggest part of the job...

I like to use the disc with abrasive “strings” to remove fuzzies. But I also really have grown to like these as a buffer after on linwax finished carvings. I add carnuba to my Linwax mix and buffing it out with one of these really brings out a nice even sheen to the wood carving. Might pick up a kit like this as they do tend to wear out fairly quickly. Thanks!

I bought some like that from ebay a couple of years ago or maybe more, they were cheap which I think was half the problem, the larger grits were not bad but as Michael has said the very fine grits seemed to do little when it came to clean up. They didn't last very long at all & as they wear down you need to be careful the metal shaft doesn't cause any damage. I found running them a a low(ish) speed worked better & seemed to make them last a little longer

Just ordered some 3M abrasive sanding wheels, 80 grit, from Amazon. Does anyone know why I had to verify I was a "professional" finisher to get these?

Well, I do and teach some finishing at the maker space I volunteer at, and do pay lots attention to safety issues, which is my rationale for the claim.
