Thank You Michael That is definitely a compliment from a you the guy who creates FREE Projects for us here on the forum and the of course NEWBIES out there because without those projects I certainly would not be doing as well as this.

Your FREE projects have been a very big help!!!

Thank you for the kind words! I’m very glad the free projects are helpful!

What you are doing with this chair project is amazing. Reverse engineering, creating the plans, cutting the prototype and on and on.

A bunch of us are really enjoying following your progress updates and photos! Thank you!

When the original poster of this thread had asked I was about plans for a high chair which converted to a rocker. I was puzzled at first not sure what he was asking so I went browsing the internet to see what I could find. Of course I did not realize it was something from the past (an Antique). After searching and finding something closely related to what the poster was asking for but not as plans but the genuine article! I saw this as a Challenge (I happen to love a good challenge when presented with one). The original photos of what I could find was noted to be a very rare item. I was also thinking on this and imagining the individual that originally produced this High chair/rocker with the tools of the day during his time. What a challenge he had under taken!!!

The chair stood out as something that could be easily produced from a CNC machine all that was needed was a set of plans. So the challenge for me had begun!!!

I thank everyone who has been following this thread for it has been your interest too that has driven/pushed me forward!!! :)

Well the Seat is now carved/cut for the High Chair/Rocker.

Next is the Upper Back Support which I believe is going to be challenging for it is a curved back support. I will probably approach it as a two-sided carving on thick stock material using a fluting toolpath.

Any other suggestions?

Have the design setup in V-carve for the Back support using a fluting toolpath on one side and a moulding toolpath on the other on 2 inch material stock. Looks as if that may work well.

Off to the mill to get some 2 inch stock material or I could go to the big box store get some 1" material stock and laminate/glue together.

May even look for some material stock for the arm rests, the serving tray and its supports.

Progress Report 2/24/2020

I have the Back Support carved and dowels cut for armrests and supports.

Here are the Chair (Upper Section of Assembly) photos.

The only items left to carve are the serving tray and serving tray support arms. Then the careful task of gluing and assembling the High Chair Rocker. Must pay close attention to each detailed part in the lower section it is a maze of parts one slip up and then I have to remake parts.

Michael and Scott,

Thank you for your kind words! This project has been a tremendous challenge and undertaking.

I have gained a lot of respect for wood craftsman of the past. I can also imagine all the little scraps of paper scattered about the craftsman's work area with tiny notes here and there of images from what was in the mind of this craftsman when he took on the project of building the early version of this high chair/rocker. I can also see that wood pile of scraps from his trial and error which eventually became firewood for the fireplace or stove of the day! He was probably driven by a new child or grandchild in the family ---

How Grand that must have been when he completed that High Chair/Rocker!!! :)

Project update 02/27/2020

Preparations are underway for carving the Serving Tray and Serving Tray Support Arms. I have the stock material. I am working out all the design details in V-Carve Pro at the present time. Hope to send to CNC Machine soon (like in the morning for an early fresh start) after the cup of caffeine of course!

Serving Tray and Serving Tray Arms are cut! :)

Now for all the table router rounding of edges, and sanding of all the parts! Once that is complete start putting this prototype together!

Need to get that Spoilboard changed soon!

All the parts that required rounding some of the edges and sanding are done. Ready for the final light sanding finish.

This is all created from Premium Pine for it is only a prototype. Does anyone have suggestions as to the finish coat (No paint) something that will tend to bring out the grain structure adding character to the project?

I was thinking after the light sanding I would use a pre-stain wood conditioner first then after that is dry apply a natural wood stain when that dries maybe spray a clearcoat semi-gloss poly on it.

Suggestions/Comments
