Small edge lit gift for a little girl

Post by Xxray »

I etched the butterfly profile design into the plexi and from there it was pretty simple to use paint pens to fill in the etches. Is only about 4" square, made it to fit in the slot of this little plastic LED base. I think it looks better unlit, when its lit it highlights the flaws but hey, I doubt if a little girl is going to care much about that.

Yeah the clear white light kinda washes out the colors, think I might put a little diffuser strip in the slot to tone down the glare

I forgot where I got them from, wish I remembered. They are tough to track down, a buddy of mine who I haven't heard from in a couple years used to get stuff through an outfit that supplied engraving materials for his laser, pretty big outfit I'm sure some here have heard of it. Anyways I think I got them through him at that place, I got a box of 12 and am down to the last few.

I love your project, Doug!

Reminds me of when I made multi-layer glass butterfly art pieces. I segregated portions of the wings and hand painted a portion on each layer to yield a “3D effect” when the glass layers were stacked together and framed.

Thanks for the memories! :D

Craft people should not underrate plexi+paint pens ,,, Alot of folks would simply slap a vinyl sticker on and call it good, using paint gives it that hand made look and feel, it will never be perfect.

Main thing to watch out for is paint blobbing out of the pen, can easily happen with too much pressure.
