Asymmetric Bowls
I have had a longstanding interest in bowls that cannot be produced by turning because they are not radially symmetric. Some very interesting shapes can be produced mathematically in 3D and produced on CNC. I use Mathematica for this purpose. For example I designed and made egg shaped bowls carved out of solid plywood layered to a depth of about 6 inches. The layer lines combined with asymmetry and the fact that the bowls sit with the lip at a slight angle plays tricks on the eyes that expect perfect roundness, and suggests motion. I have attached two examples of radially asymmetric bowls that could be carved with Aspire. The shell design is one I have made; the other I have not yet carved. My shop is presently in storage/transit so it will be a while before I can get to these and others. So posting the stl files seems like a good idea to let others enjoy them. There are some real challenges in producing such shapes by CNC, not the least of which is vertical clearance. Bit wear, especially by very hard and abrasive plywood, is another. Setting up the tool paths is not easy, and I found it easier in Cut3D than in Aspire, surprisingly. I hope somebody will try these and report back their experiences. The stl files for import into Aspire can be downloaded from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/u98zgdisf3dw ... njWRa?dl=0

Hello Spiantad,
Just clearing out my bookmarks and thought I'd take a look at the STL files for these but... The dropbox link reports that they can't be found. Any chance of reposting?
Thanks,
Steven

Merci beaucoup. Or as we used to say when I was a kid: mercy buckets.

Re: Asymmetric Bowls
WOW - cool bowls. I fully agree with making things that cannot be done on a wood lathe. These are on my bucket list now.
Thank you so very much.

Re: Asymmetric Bowls
Just came across this. Very nice work. I have done something similar for a customer who wanted a seashell engagement ring box. I must admit that I cut through on the first draft, but eventually worked out the offsets to get consistent wall thickness.

Re: Asymmetric Bowls
I had trouble cutting through a couple of egg shaped bowls when the shape was defined by a surface rather than a solid. One has to be careful with the depth of cut and the way the block is oriented when flipped over. These stl files are solids so this should not be a problem with a two sided job in Aspire.

Seems like the link has disappeared again, I would like to try these too if possible.

Let's see if OneDrive lets me share something. https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgfEYBnBPosjjV0YHdM ... H?e=8c4GQ3
Result should be "Asymmetric_Bowls.zip" which is a copy of the original poster's file renamed so that I don't delete it soon.

Thank you Steven, that worked, now I just have to find the time to tackle it.
