Visiting 3D carving
Hello, I was attempting to set up a 3D carving this evening, The tutorial videos made it look fairly straight forward but I believe I am missing a step or two on the clean up of the final finish tool path , it looks a little rough to me. I have attached my file for assistance.
Thank You

Re: Visiting 3D carving
Use Ball Nose cutters and reduce the step over, especially on the finishing toolpath, try 8%

Can't upload the file, it's just over sized, even zipped, but here are the tools and setting I used.

Re: Visiting 3D carving
The other thing to watch out for is the size of the model in relation to the material. The smaller the model is in relation to the material the more pixels are being wasted and the resulting model will be lower resolution than it would otherwise be.
The major issue here though, as stated previously, is the stepover is way too big on the finishing pass.

Re: Visiting 3D carving
On thing that I have started doing is to make a second finish pass with a smaller cutter and stepover
1) Roughing pass with .25 end mill
2) Finish pass with .25 ball end mill
3) Finish pass with .020 tapered ball end mill.
The results are fantastic.
Much more detail and cleaner finish.

Am wondering how results would be different or any better with an extra pre-finish pass. In theory, there shouldn't be any difference.Jan.vanderlinden wrote:On thing that I have started doing is to make a second finish pass with a smaller cutter and stepover

I can't see any way two finish passes over the same material would make any difference to the final result. Rest Machining, yes; this, no.

Re: Visiting 3D carving
Seems like a waste of time, resources and energy to me but Jan is no novice and produces top notch work, we'll see what he has to say. He does say he reduced stepover and uses a smaller bit on the 2nd finish pass and this of course can make a great difference in detail ,, But this could [should] have been done in the first place, I'm just not seeing the logic, especially since most people look to decrease cutting time, not increase it.gkas wrote:+1.Xxray wrote:Am wondering how results would be different or any better with an extra pre-finish pass. Re: Visiting 3D carving
If you use Z-level roughing then I can see "2. Finish..." with a large step-over as being a 2nd roughing cut to clear away the bulk of the material for the 020 bit.
If you are using a 3D raster roughing pass then sure #2 is probably superfluous. But, I could imagine many cases where "Z-level" plus the 1/4" ball pass would be quicker than using "3D raster".

Re: Visiting 3D carving
Well sure, 2nd pass can be looked at as "2nd roughing pass" or "1st finish pass". I have never seen a case where a roughing pass needed to remove more material for a finish bit, in fact I often forego roughing all together in all but the hardest of woods and deepest of cuts. Unless you are using a machine made out of plastic and a bit made in Nigeria, there is IMO no logical/useful reason to add another pass to the process, this is the 1st I have ever heard of it being done which is why I am curious as to why, I grant that maybe I am missing something here.

Re: Visiting 3D carving
Forgoing if the second roughing pass is necessary or not and just go ahead with perhaps a smaller roughing bit and then use the tapered ball mill.
A question about the tapered ball mill if I may please,
How exactly would I go about setting one of these up (Tapered Ball Mill) in the Tool Database? (*typical newbie question )
and are they a useful bit to have to hand.
I may add one of these bits to my Santa List Many Thanks
Regards

Re: Visiting 3D carving
There is a tapered ball nose tool type in the list of tools. Click the Add Tool icon in the bottom left and then choose the Tapered Ball Nose from the dropdown that appears in the dialog.
