Hello, I just purchased a Shapeoko 3 machine and am learning the tooling part of it right now. Could I get some suggestions on what tooling would you guys would use on cutting out the dog (see Attachment) on 3/4" mdf ?
It says it is 1/16" ball nose tested so I guess that would be the last tool used.
Thanks, George

I have a Shapeoko and have used a Whiteside SC64 bit for something like that. I do rough it our with a standard #201 end mill first leaving around 0.05" for the ball nose to clean up.

No need to do a Roughing on a dished project like this. Choose a 1/16” Tapered Ballnose, set up a Raster Finish Toolpath.
The carve will start at the edge of the dish (which is flush with the top of your material, normally). The bit will take small shavings at a time as it Raster carves gradually deeper.
A 6% to 8% Stepover Raster with the grain will yield a clean carve with little to no machine marks visible after-the-fact.

The size of the project also matters.Could I get some suggestions on what tooling would you guys would use on cutting out the dog (see Attachment) on 3/4" mdf ?
It says it is 1/16" ball nose tested so I guess that would be the last tool used.
For example, if the project is 3"x3" then you might need a smaller bit to get the detail.
If the project is 36"x36" then you could use a larger diameter bit.
