Is there a way to minimize the rough edges you sometimes get on vertices (or near verticals) edges during finish passes of 3D models?

Node editing is important,
Adding a draft to the vertical edges and a bit of soft sculpting will help.

Re: Vertical edges on finishing
They can be reduced as Michael said, but honestly? I have not seen anyone who can make them go away without a lot of extraordinary effort.

Depending on proximity of the surface a zero plane can sometimes help.
