Mystery Lines

Hello,
I've run into this scenario several times and am wondering about it...
After setting up a job, I import a model from AutoCAD in stl. format. After setting the tool paths, the machined part appears like the attached image. I'm confused why these lines appear, as the AutoCAD model I created did not have any of them. I've tried adjusting the preview simulation quality in the VCarve Pro software, but that hasn't seemed to do too much. My concern is that the lines would show up in the finished machined product. BTW I am using version 9.518.

After you have imported the model into your VCarve software, do you see the "lines" on the model when in the 3D view? If so, then the triangulation resolution that the model was exported with is not fine enough.

What modeling resolution are you using when you set up the job in vcarve before you import the stl file? Have you tried setting up with a higher resolution?
As Michael says what does the 3D model look like in the 3D view after you have imported it?

If model appears okay after you have checked what the others have provided for you to check.

Then this is my thoughts on the problem:

Sometimes during the tool path process material is left for the finishing pass and it will leave discrepancies that you have noted . Are the noted lines showing up after the finishing pass preview or are you asking this question before you continue on with finishing pass?

Some answers are:
Yes, I do see lines after importing the model into VCarve software. So I guess possibly the triangulation resolution I'm exporting from AutoCAD isn't fine enough.
I tried setting up the finest modeling resolution in VCarve, but that didn't change anything.
Even with a fine finishing pass in the highest resolution, the lines are still there.

I'll try a higher triangulation resolution export from AutoCAD and let you know how it works....if I can figure that out

If it's a solid model, type FACETRES in AutoCAD and set it to 10, then export.

Thank you! - in AutoCAD, setting FACETRES to 10 did the trick precisely.

I have been looking online for the way to remedy this same issue when exporting an stl from SketchUp. Would anyone have a suggestion with this?

With Sketchup it's a bit trickier as the facets (segments) are set when the model is drawn rather than at export time.

Okay thanks....that makes sense. I'll try to work the issue backwards to rectify this in SketchUp.
