Vectric Cribbage Board Project

Post by mikenbrenda »

I wanted to make this free project and I can’t find .233 end mills and .39 ball nose bits, is there an alternative? I found the .115 end mill, I wanted to buy on Amazon so I get them quick why not just use standard sizes? Like .25? Why not use standard size so is newbies can get into it easy.. Lol maybe I’m being stupid somewhere

Looks like whoever made the original file was using metric bits. .233 is very close to 6mm, and .39 is very close to 10mm. The .115 was likely a 3mm bit.

The critical decision about what size bits you could use instead is based on what each bit is expected to do. If the .233 bit was just doing profile cuts around the perimeter then a .25" bit should be fine. If the .115" bit was drilling/pocketing holes then you could use a .125" bit if the hole diameter was .125 or larger. Not sure what the ball end bit was used for, but a 3/8 (.375") bit would likely be a fine alternative.

Well it sorta looks like someone did not know that 25.4 is a magic number. . . .

The peg holes are drawn at .125 so that should solve that problem.

I don't see where any of the rest of it is critical either.

Like Mr 4D said, imperial tools will work fine.

One must remember that all of the world (except one country) uses metric. . .

And Vectric headquarters are not in the US. . .

You are forgetting that Burma/myanmar and Liberia use the imperial system.

I keep getting people saying things like:
  • what’s half of 1 and 3/16 inches (yuk, yuk, yuk) — easy 1/2” plus 3/32”…next...
  • problem with using inches is you need to use fractions rather than decimals — huh?!?
I get my own back by saying: I’m 1880 mm tall; how many decimeters is that? And lo and behold these people seem incapable of providing the answer.

I use “Imperial” / “Metric” depending on what is necessary and there are no pros or cons to sway me one way or another. Nor do I feel the need to enter a 1/4” bit into the database as 6.35mm—let the software do the conversion for you.

Although I must say that the Babylonians had it right: base tweleve is superior to base ten (more factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 rather than 1, 2, 5, 10)….
