Snack Bowl Project

Post by cusoak »

The attached file is for a snack bowl.
Question is this I run a Dewalt 611 1.25 hp router,
I would like some thoughts on what bit, bits to use on the pocket areas I want to make them 1" deep
I want to use a bowl bit but was wondering in it would be better to use and end mil to clearance out most of the pocket first in hopes of speeding up the cut time.
Then put in the bowl bit to finish up.

I added a few enhancements to your design.

Filleted the corners to a .25 radius
Rounded over the edges with a 3/16" point round-over bit.
Changed the pocket depth to 1.5"
Used a .75" bottoming bowl bit with a .25" EM clearance bit

Here is what it would look like. Of course you would need the bits with a depth of cut long enough.

Ok that all sound great,
Now I just need to figure out how to get the .75 bowl bit into the Tools file and set up some feed and speed rates

Not used a bowl cutting bit but you should be able to enter it as an endmill, f you look in the dropdown list there is the option for a radiused endmill

It is a good idea to use a "ramp in" type of leader with a bowl bit. They are fairly large diameter bits and plunging them can be problematic.

If it were me I would use the bowl bit for the entire pocket to avoid mismatched cuts.

I put mine in "Form Tools". Attached is a link to a V-Carve file with all of the Magnate bit profiles. I downloaded it from Magnate.net as a .dxf file and imported it. Zoom in close on the bit you want to add, go into node edit mode and cut the vector at the mid point. Use the right half to create the bit in the tool database.

You can also use a Core Box bit. This is an example of a tray I made for one of Michael Tyler's Paradise boxes using a .5" Core Box.

Nice looking box and thanks for the link to the bits.
If I am going to cut a 1.5 pockit I must need to know that I have enough shank to allow me to get that depth before the router hits the top of the wood. Is that correct?

The link is an Aspire file which won't load into VCarve. It needs to be saved as a VCarve file from Aspire.

I just converted Steves file to crv but for some reason it won't let me unload it, I will try again latter unless someone else does it in the mean time

Oops. Both .crv and crv3d files are in the shared folder. I just picked the wrong one for the link.

This link should work.

Martin:
It wouldn't upload for me either so I just posted a shared link. I think the file is too big for the forum limit.

If the bit has a cutting width that is larger than the collet, like a bowl bit, you will probably be okay. Experiment in small steps to be sure.

Yes file limit would be the problem, I was in a bit of a hurry as I was going out, never stopped to think that it was a link you posted & not the actual file, I blame it on old age
