Layers

Post by Belever »

Hello everyone,
I've been reading all of yours questions and answers and it's been a great read.
Thanks to you all for being so ready to ask and answer.
I've been following for a few months now and bought a machine. I've only done a couple things "without destroying" them thanks to you.
It just dawned on me how the layers help in putting putting models together .

Anyone remember that?
What's your best tip on using them to make modeling/creating? Easier or regular.
Thanks

I keep " like minded" items on their own layers.
All words on one layer, all ribbons on another, for example. ( I make a lot of badges for people )
Or I will build a model from the bottom up and at each new section I'll add a new layer..

One major tip on how to make it easier...Practice.

Michael is spot-on (as usual.) When I model I put the vectors on a "vector" layer so I can turn them off when I have the model complete. I also create layers for different parts of the model... name the layers so you can quickly recognize what is on it. Watch the Vectric tutorials... there is so much information in them. I still watch them regularly (usually one or two a week) and learn something every time.

Not really a modeling tip, but I find layers very useful for different toolpath types. If I have a lot of parts that need, say, a pocket, some holes and a final cutout, then I'll put the pocket vectors in one layer, the hole vectors in another and the cutouts in third. This makes it easier to select the right vectors when creating the toolpaths, and also works nicely with toolpath templates when you get further down the road and are tired of creating every toolpath from scratch.

Develop a style for how you use colors on layers -- whatever makes sense for you. Perhaps color by tool type, or for text vs. text converted to vectors, pocket vs. profiles vs. V-carve vs. 3D

As Steve said, relating layers to toolpaths is a great way to manage your projects.
