Thin or Thick Lettering

Post by SteveNelson46 »

I'm making a house sign for my daughter and her husband. They recently moved into a new house in southern Maryland and I'm trying to decide which style of lettering looks better. They both are the same size and font but one is bold.

I was kind of in favor of the bold font also so I gave it a try. The v-carve just barely went all the way through the board. The 15" by 24" sign was designed with a .75" thick board and there are several layered components. The banner was the thickest and the height of the border was adjusted so it didn't come up through the banner. Then the height of the background was adjusted to match the inside edge of the border. The problem was that I really didn't have enough board thickness for all of the adjustments, I didn't consider the size of the lettering, and I didn't think about how deep the v-carved lettering would go (oops). It looked okay in the preview but changing the lettering to bold was a last minute adjustment. I have increased the board thickness to 1" and adjusted the heights of the components. I'll give it another try today.

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear things went south on you.

If you set a Flat Depth for your bolder letters, they won’t carve through your board (as long as you make the Flat Depth less than your board thickness, of course).

I tried that but I really didn't like the look. A 1 inch thick board will be a little heavier but may look better anyway. I haven't had a chance to work in the shop today. Tomorrow is another day.

Well, you could also go "semi" bold.

Convert the text to curves and then offset them a bit.

You could use a larger v-bit or different angle.
