U.S. Wavy flag (TReischl) with eagle head.

Post by mark-s »

U.S. Wavy flag (thanks to TReischl) with eagle head.
Maple 7/16 thick, 3 X 5 , straight off the machine, no clean up
or finish.
1 mm ball nose bit for the carve and a 3/16 down cut for profile.
Maple was from an old cabinet draw side, Maple carves so nice,
very little clean up.

Looks good! Happy to see at least one person getting some use from the model.

Apparently you are having a lot of fun with those .25R tapered ball nose bits. I love em myself. But. . . .

I am cutting a flag that is 36 X 22 X 2.75 thick right now. No .25R ball nose on that one!

I have cut out a smaller one like yours and am just putting on the finishing touches to the paint job. I may easily be the world's worst painter, especially small stuff like that. Houses? No problem.

What bit would you use?
Roughing pass, size bit?
Do like that 0.25 BN bit for small stuff.
Thanks

Mark, if you are asking about the large flag I am working on. . . .

I used a 10mm HSS cutting 5mm deep at 350 IPM. Stepover was 7mm (70%). Roughing time was 1hr 42min
Finishing was a .25 ball nose at 150 IPM. Finishing was 5hrs 21min

The blank size was 38X24X2.75

Here is a link to a video of it cutting:

Sanding and clean up, all afternoon.

I am not real thrilled with this eagle at a large size, way too muddy. So I got out my carving tools and am giving it some definition. It wasn't the .25 ball nose, it was the model itself. Someone went ape with smoothing or something. When it is all done I will post it up here.
