Chest

Post by Mobius »

Hey all. Some of you may remember a few years ago we built our first chest. We were asked this year to build another one. We've learned many things in the time between, which helped on this latest build. Still made a few mistakes and learned some lessons, but it was much easier than the first.

Building the lid (had to emergency CNC a support for the middle before the glue set, the forces on the bent plywood bulged the sides of the lid out significantly):

Good job. I like how it turned out. I did one very similar and about the same size for my Great Granddaughter last year. I used a couple of gas spring supports on the lid so the 2-year old could lift it and it wouldn't slam close on her fingers.

Very very nice!!!!! I really like the thought put into finishing. It was nice to see the pictures from start to finish to show the different stages of the build process. I'm new to Forum but I can tell there are a lot of talented people like yourself, thank you for your post.

Ya, the hinge things inside serve the same purpose on this one. They are spring loaded to slow the lid down when it closes.

Hey Connor!

This project is epic! Thanks for sharing! I have a question, for the chest lid where you created several cuts to make the wood bend, I'm curious to know how much (thickness) did you leave uncut?

Thanks,

I cut to just below the veneer on the plywood. It is crucial to make the cuts perpendicular to the grain on the veneer; if you make the cuts with the grain it will split.

It amazes me how much it can bend.

Clip of my test cut:

The narrower spaced cuts could actually bend a full 90º, had I pushed a little harder in the video.

Connor, I don't think you made the YouTube video public, it's showing that it's not available.
