Perhaps not, but it appears he is cutting a negative of the model - either there is an incorrect measurement of the material being cut or the setup is fouled somehow.

it appears he is cutting a negative of the model
Optical illusion because of lower left lighting and rotated picture, it's a normal carve.
I tried to duplicate and I believe you lost some Z steps during the carve. Since the middle zone is cut last, the change in Z showed up in that area.
