Multi Layers

Tried my hand today at Multi-layering text. Made a sign for my best bud getting married next weekend. A tad bit more sanding and some stain. I think it'll be nice. -Oscar

I also want to thank you for sharing your expertise on Multi layers. I’m in the process of learning new features in VCP 8 and spent the last couple days working through some tutorials including the Simple Crest tutorial dealing with the Modeling tools and modeling layers. After a little struggling with the fad and tilt tools I successfully completed the plaque. Did not actually carve it but looks good in simulator.

My first thought is how I might add text to the banner in the Simple Crest plaque. In this string of posts
I see your response to TChill5506 regarding imported 3D files. So far I have been working with V3M files. But I see in the modeling import file list several other file formats (like stl, 3ds, 3dm, dxf, obj) (1) Are these other file formats fully functional with the VCP 8 modeling tools? (2) Might there be a source for 3D Text objects that would be compatible with VCP? Assuming there is not 3d text capability with VCP! How would you add simple text to the banner in the above referenced project?

I should say! I’m afraid that upgrading to Aspire is not in my budget right now and I’m really delighted with the powerful features in VCP 8.

Either way I plan to attempt your well documented procedure for multi layering. Even an old-timer can learn something new. <smile>

This is an update of my earlier post. I tried importing another 3D file format (Sketchup -SKP) and see there is a limit of a single file with other than the 3D Machinist (V3M) files. So that would not allow model layering.

So this only leaves you with the question of adding text to the 3D objects.

I would suggest the best way to add text to a 3D object in VCarve would be to machine it into the shape. In this video tutorial: http://support.vectric.com/tutorials/V8 ... _3DTP.html this technique is shown on the text with the banner.

Love this Forum, its been a Great Help! This is my first post. Hello and I hope all is well for everyone.

After several hours to no prevail, I decided to post for some help before I finally pull all my hair out. LOL

The problem I have is that the center of the "O in wilson" and "open part of the S in stacey" and the "E within the W" is not being carved out. I have tried everything BUT, the right method. I have attached a pic along with the actual files. The tutorial by TMERRILL got me 80% of the way. It was a tremendous help. Thank You for that TMERRILL

Any help in Detail would really be appreciated. Going to be an Anniversary gift for the wife

quick answer as I don't have the software on this machine, are you sure you didn't miss those vectors when you grouped the text for each word

You have to convert each word to curves..then GROUP each one together, then weld. That should do it for you.

I followed TMERRILL's tutorial to a "T" and I still am not sure whats going wrong. maybe I need to tell what i did short n sweet.

1. start - text and border drawn this is on "Layer 1"
2. selected all text and "right clicked" copy to "layer2" not visible
3. "layer 1" select small text and border then do simple pocket, looks good.
4. Activate and make "Layer2" Visible. So BOTH layers are visible now and layer2 is activated. Select ALL text then convert to curves.

Is this correct so far?

No, you are forgetting to group each layer of text. So the top layer is grouped together then select the bottom text and group that together. Now select both top and bottom layers of text and hit weld.

I've not used it, but brush-on liquid masking is available. One could paint the top color, mask, carve, paint with sealer, paint on 2nd color, mask,and so on.
