Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
This tray is a modification of the one that SteveNelson46 provided recently. Thanks for the file Steve.
I added the circular pocket in the center, added some decorative Vcarve, and installed a modified finial that is sold by Lowes Home Improvement and Hobby Lobby in the US. The 3/4" finial is too tall, so I cut both ends down on a belt sander to the 0.6" height and reshaped the rounded end. A 1/4" dowel is glued into the hole in the finial and a small flat head wood screw holds it in place from the bottom of the tray.
Four wooden 2-5/8" long wedges are vertically glued into the corners of the box to provide support for the tray. Two of these have Early American stain and two have no stain. The decorative Vcarve has Java gel stain in it.

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
Over the past weekend I installed the trays in the first two Paradise boxes that I made. My two sisters brought them when they visited, and it only took 10 minutes each while they watched. As long as the four wedges are very close to the same length the trays were not wobbly. The box on the left has Early American and Java stain on it. The one on the right has only Java stain in the weave design.
They are very happy with the new tray addition.

I love those trays as well. I noticed on the pictures that the lids are up and wondered how you support the lids without the chain on the original plans.
Great job.

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
Thanks Michael. This version has no 3D modeling, just Pocket and Vcarve tool paths. There is even a "center punch" mark left in the center for drilling a screw hole for the knob with a cordless drill, but it can be done with the CNC machine if desired. I was just avoiding another manual tool change for that one hole.mtylerfl wrote:I LOVE those trays!

Thanks, and you're welcome. Be sure that your box's inside dimensions match the profile vector and allow some slop so it drops in easily. Paint buildup should be allowed for.tajohns wrote:Nice job!

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
My first boxes had the top panel set flush with the back side of the box and I used some chain. Later I began to set the top panel flush with the front of the box. It makes a difference in how the hinge mortice is made, but what happens is that the small overhang at the back edge rests on the outer face of the rear panel. It will support the weight of the top panel, but it puts stress on the hinges if they are small hinges. I use a 12" strip hinge and grind off 1/8" from each end. I added a dado to the rear panel's top edge. See the note in that CAD file. It is a simple tool path using a 1/4" down spiral router bit just before cutting the profile. I have a procedure for installing the 12" hinge that I'll supply if anyone needs it.MarkJohnston wrote:I love those trays as well. These two boxes had chains, so I removed the chains and glued two small pieces of red oak as "bumpers" to the rear of the box and stained and applied polyurethane as appropriate since one box was natural color.

Here is a photo of the little bumpers I put on the boxes. They are about 3/8" square and can be 0.1" to 0.15" thick. Adjust the thickness to have the top panel positioned where you like it when open.

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
In the .crv3d file I posted the tool path is set up to cut the pockets first, then the Vcarve decorations and bevels, then the profile. I recommend changing it to do the Vcarve stuff first, then the pockets, then the profile. If anything gets mis-registered it will be obvious before it spends an hour cutting the pockets. Don't even ask why I brought that up ...
Of course, change the post processor to whatever your setup needs.
I use a Whiteside #1540 60 degree 1/4" diameter V-bit, a Precise Bits 1/4" diameter round nose end mill, and a 1/4" diameter flat nose down-spiral router bit from Lowe's that is made by Bosch. All are solid carbide.
There has been a lot of downloads, so maybe some will show up around here soon.

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
My horse rider friend in West Palm Beach suggested a new method of supporting the tray. He asked me to do this on a new Paradise box for his girlfriend. His idea is to make the tray supports also act as four ring posts that keep larger rings that are too big to fit in the tray from rolling around in the bottom of the box. Multiple rings can be stacked on each post.
The 1" spacing is my first guess, and may need to be changed to suit other ring sizes. The dowel diameter is also negotiable. This is just a suggestion that those of you who have downloaded the various Paradise Box tray files can consider using.

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
That is a great idea although I would go a bit bigger on the dowel (just my first take)...

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
Thanks Paul, and I agree with Joe that the dowels need to be larger. The image was just intended to get the idea across.
I also thought about putting something like heat shrink tubing over the dowels since it comes in clear and other colors. It may help protect the inside of the rings from scratches.

Re: Another version of the Paradise Box Tray
My wife has suggested adding flocking (simulated velvet) to the tray to minimize scratching, might consider something like that for the dowels.
I have made 5 boxes so far and still need to post the pics, I will get to that this week.
