Such a cool idea to have a go with 2x4 lumber. It really shows how you can make something really nice out of rough stuff.
Love the quarter stuck in there.

Very nice.

That turned out pretty good for using 2x4s! We don't have very good quality 2x4 up here in Alberta, not like the yellow pine in the southern states! Ours is mostly spruce, which grows quickly and is very soft.

I certainly was pleased with the outcome. To build the three more I had to go and pick through a goodly sized pile at the local Home Depot to get enough without checking or cracks to build them.

It takes a lot longer to glue up 2x4s, but is a lot cheaper than 8/4 hardwood. :)

My next ones will be Maple and Walnut. If I can get some 8/4 at a reasonable price. sigh.

I buy most of my hardwood from Upper Canada Forest Products in Calgary (but they ship out of Edmonton now as well).

I usually have a few thousand board feet of 8/4 maple and walnut in stock. You should stop by my shop if you are ever near Wetaskiwin.

That's a really good price, if its decent lumber. Right now I'm paying $4.50/bf for 8/4 FAS kiln dried hard white maple, and that's a full lift at a time (~1000bf). But that includes shipping from Ontario.

Called him, and he wants almost $4/bf for 8/4 and up to $13 for figured.

Russell,

The 60 cent to a buck must of been for the maple only useful as firewood. I have no idea what figured maple fetches on the market. Black Forest Wood Products in Calgary wants $8.50 a BF for boards longer than 6 feet and $7.80 a bf for shorts.

It's no wonder you buy yours a lift (1,000 bf) at a time.

Cheers,

James

Black Forest Wood Products is a pretty expensive place to buy wood, because they mostly sell in small quantities. But they have some nice stuff! Try Upper Canada Forest Products in Calgary, or PJ White (Richelieu). You will need a business account for both, but they have excellent prices and lots of stock. They might have minimum order sizes though.

Russell,

Thanks for the tip. I've bought lumber before from PJ White but couldn't remember their name. Are they now owned by Richelieu?

Cheers,

James

Russell,
I’m trying to locate my stool files but I no longer have the email you sent the Dropbox email to. What can I do to get the files again?

Thanks

I have just bought the plans for 17 and 24" stools. I must say I'm impressed. Old and new styles are included. also included detailed instructions for carving and setting up a jig for 4 legs carving. I haven't carved then yet but I can't wait. The hardest part is choosing which stool to make.
I'll post some picks when done.
Thank you Russell.
