First Stacked Text Attempt

Post by Mobius »

I've been dying to try the stacked text style of sign, and finally had a reason to do so. And yes, I left the toolmarks on the background on purpose. I thought they gave the background some dimension.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I forgot to mention that this is another project made with salvaged hardwood flooring (Birch in this case), which is a great and eco friendly way to find expensive wood for next to nothing.

These things have been selling like hotcakes!

The last one is neat, my client said, "Do whatever you want." Normally I would be pulling my hair out, but I happen to know the families of the engaged couple. Both the bride and groom's families are old school farming families, so I went with a 'rustic barn' look.

NICE Connor:)
Looks like you've got it down pat! :)
Like the effect of cutting at a 45 to make the mill marks a feature!
Good work.

These signs are just awesome! I have tried my hand at one of them, but had an issue when cutting the outside profile (the part moved) and spoiled it. I think what really makes the signs are the contrast of colors. Would like to hear how you go about this. Nice work!

Great job! What is the font in the first 3? It's fancy enough, but not overly so.

You have inspired me, so now I know my next project.
Thanks!!

It is quite simple.

1. Cut and sand the entire sign

2. Take a small brush and cover the top face of the first name lettering with gloss clear. Let this fully dry before moving on.

3. Wipe/brush on the border/surname stain. (I used General Finishes 'Espresso' gel stain). I only stain the top face of the lettering.

4. As soon as the gel stain is dry to the touch (a few minutes), I wipe on the background colour stain over the entire sign (border/lettering as well). I find that this step really ties everything together.

5. After the background stain has dried overnight, I block sand the top face of the first name lettering to bring it back to the natural light birch/maple colouring.

6. I then spray a non-yellowing semi-gloss clear over the sign and I'm done! Total time to colour the sign is about an hour (not including wait time between the staining stages and clear coats).
