Salt Boxes

These are a couple of salt boxes I am working on for a client who has a spice shop and she is interested in maybe putting them in her store. The single box style is pretty much done but the double box is still being tweeked. The single box is made with cherry and maple, the double box is cypress which is plentifull and inexpensive in Louisiana.

Have you thought about using a pointed roundover bit for the cutout? Whiteside 1/2"D 1/4"R works well for thin stock(see pic) a little slower but safer for the fingers. Not good with tabs, but decent with "onion skin". I think a contrasting wood dowel(or even a blind dowel) would look nice vs. screw head. Show her a couple VCarved tops too
People can spend big bucks for something that sits in public like that, and a Spice Shop would seem to have a higher end clientele that are proud of their kitchens. Maybe "Gift" them a super fancy/ridiculously expensive one for the shop? Makes the basic one seem like a real bargain! You might be surprised.

Hi Bobby,
Great work and thanks for the inspiration.
I had a go and adjusted the design to have the left-hand lid act as a stop for the right-hand lid and vice versa.

Love the way you did the stops by interlocking.
Also the one piece carving(good grain matching on glue-up) of the base using a bowl shape to keep ingredients in the center where they belong and eliminate corners for easy cleaning!
Elegant, simple design
For bowl shape, was that done with Aspire? or VCP using fluting toolpath?

Alan, that is a wonderful design (and one I will have to 'borrow')! How are you holding the lids/dowels in place?

Hi Mike,
The dowels are bonded to the lids but are free to be disassembled from the base to allow easy occasional cleaning.
That's my excuse anyway.

I had a PM asking how I created the geometry in VCP
The attached file shows the steps.
I've used Layers to show the sequence.
(show the layers one-by-one for best effect)
Layer 1 - Create two circles
Layer 2 - Add the third circle and line
Layer 3 - Mirror the left circle about the right hand line
Layer 4 - (show layer 4 on its own) Achieve the final result making use of Vectric's 'trim' function (have fun)
Conclusion...
The construction would be much simpler if we could construct circles using tangency and if the 'trim function were more accurate.
The above solution, with lines crossing the tangent points seems to overcome most issues.

Thanks Alan! Your construction is elaborate yet simple. A circle to circle tangent function would be very useful if it could be incorporated in future versions of Vectric software.
