How did you get it painted so nice without a mask? My hand shakes like a drunk coming off the DT's after a night in lockup. Before you say huh? I observe this a lot at work..lol..

Re: More Baby Picture Frames
Thanks for all the great comments guys!
^^^ LOL antennasDIY, I also have the shakes. The trick is to try and paint it as carefully as possible with out driving yourself nuts. Yes I get paint up on the face and lots of it, I just keep a rag handy to wipe off the excess paint.
Then when it’s all painted and looks awful, I use an orbital or palm sander to sand off all the excess paint. I haven’t had too much problem with bleeding into the grain on the face. This is how I do it, I’m always amazed how crisp the painted letters look after sanding the face.
The paint I use is “Americana" Gloss Enamels, DecoArt.com". I buy it at "Michael’s Craft store”
Then I clear Coat after with a “satin, clear Varathane , premium, diamond wood finish, water based, interior, crystal clear, non-yellowing, ultimate protection, fast drying spray paint. I buy it at HomeDepot or Lowes building supplies stores, I spray 3 or more coats back and face.
Cheers,
Carrie

Re: More Baby Picture Frames
Carrie and all,
Regarding the painting, do you think it would work to start with stock that is slightly thicker and do the VCarving first. Then paint and let dry. Then plane off the extra off the surface and run the rest of the toolpaths after that.
For example, currently the material size is 3/4". Imagine having a material size that is 13/16" and have the vcarving be 1/16" deeper then it is now. Then you could paint and be as messy and shakey as you want. It could even be applied with a spray gun. After the paint dries, do a pocket toolpath to shave off 1/16" off the entire piece and run the rest of the toolpaths with a start depth of 1/16". Do you think that would work on this project?
When we tried this we found out (the hard way), that sometimes the paint bleeds into the end grain, but by applying a coat of shellac first and then painting this didn't happen.
Anyone have any comments about this?
Thanks,
--Andy

Re: More Baby Picture Frames
I will apply sanding sealer before I cut. I find this leaves a clean edge around the cuts that wont bleed. Simple to wipe off or sand when complete for final finish.
I tried the large pocket to skim the surface, but my original took longer to pocket than the simple sanding/wiping and it would need sanding as well with some of the tooling marks left. Yes these can be minimized with settings and cutter choice but ultimately I have found sealing prior to be the best for my applications.
Just my two cents.

Re: More Baby Picture Frames
Thanks so much for the files and inspiration! I made one. Well I tried one but ended up making 3 cracks at it. Forgot to change the bit once and it ran the toolpath with a V bit instead of the endmill. Ooops.
I painted the edges but I won't do that again. I'll just leave it natural.
Thanks again!!

Very nice frames - a suggestion for the glass, backing & hold in tabs - I go to the Dollar store and buy a suitable size frame for about $2.00 or less - throw away the frame and use the rest for my frame. If you can find the right size you don't even have to cut the glass.
