Bowing Swans Mantle Clock

Post by BillK »

I was asked to make this clock by someone who saw one like it on an Internet search for wooden clocks. Apparently the company was no longer making them. I designed this in Aspire. I changed the sides to make them curve like bowing swans. This was a challenge to make with my shark as the side pieces are 2 inches thick and the bottom is 2 1/4". It's also hard to take a good picture of since the color of the two woods, Ash and Walnut, contrast so much.

Although my own tastes tend more to the traditional, this piece also benefited from the precision of CNC as the fits between the two sides and the clock pendant are pretty seamless and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to do that with traditional methods.

If you haven't used ash for any project yet, I can say I highly recommend it. It carves beautifully.

That is a real nice clock you made, like the 2 different woods used.

Nice job, the text is clean and sharp. Looks like the clock is a pendulum ready to swing back and forth 8). dh

The clock is truly a present worthy to give to a royal couple. I notices how you used the grain in wood so it accents the contour of each beak.... that could not be accidental. I certainly wish that could be a project of the month (hint for Aspire to make contact)!! Thanks very much for sharing.

Thanks Joe. I really liked the grain of the ash and realized I would get a nice effect since I tilted the sides in to cut them from a 5 inch wide board. Using Aspire to curve up the fronts further enhanced the effect.

As far as a clock for royals goes, did you know that Reyes translates to Kings in English?
