Maloof style rocker

Finally finished creating the files for a Maloof style rocker. Been working on the files for a year or so, trying to convert one of the rockers I hand carved several years ago into models and cut files. I'll post pics of the jigs and methods I used later.

This is the rocker I used as the 'template'.

Here are all the parts laid out, ready to be 'assembled'.

Fresh coat of finish. Love the look of dark walnut.

You made this with a CNC machine? Not all of it, did you?

Every part except the rockers and the back slats. Those I laminated on forms cut on my Cobra.
The legs each had one dado cut on the table saw. One side of the back legs was rounded over on the router table. The back slats and rockers were rounded over on the router table. Other than that, everything was cut on my cobra.

The armrests were the hardest to design in Aspire. A very organic shape. Two sided machining in Aspire, using dowels to index.

The back legs were a bit tricky, because they angle up towards the headrest. Had to cut them on a tapered jig so the joints would cut correctly.

This is magnificent workmanship Russell, and a beautiful chair to boot. The time and thought that you invest in planning these projects really shows well. Projects like this are the perfect antidote to folks who think that CNC is all about mass-production, and not craftsmanship.

if you ever do a 2 or 3 day workshop teaching this, i'd like to attend. that's one of the coolest projects I have seen on this forum. it amazes me how people can figure it all out. beyond impressed on this one.

I'm am totally amazed at your work. I've seen Maloof's rocker at a show in Pomona at the fair grounds. Beautiful! This is just as amazing.

Really exciting work! What kind of production do you have in mind? Any rough estimate of machine time per chair? Thanks for showing us!
