Toy Car Wheels
Since this will be an entirely new series of cars designed around the new spoke wheel I am starting another toy car topic.
These wheels are scaled down from the 30" Model T wheels to 2.4" which mean the cars and trucks must be scaled up to fit the wheels.
The new wheel base will be 8.0", 1.25" longer than those designed for 2" wheels making the cars between 1.25 and 1.5" longer too.
Using a 1/8" end mill to cut the axle holes it was necessary to make the wheel slightly larger in order to make them look as realistic as possible even though it was necessary to reduce the number of spokes from 12 to 10. I started with an 8-spoke wheel at 2" diameter but I didn't like the look.

Okay, I made a 2" wheel by reducing the number of spokes to 9. If you cut it you will need to add tabs. Dale

Slight modification to the wheels.
2" wheel: Change the tool path wheel recess 1 0.04 cut depth to 0.03" to create a break between the tire and wheel.
2.4" wheel: Change the tool path wheel first recess cut depth to 0.04"
To add the illusion of tread add a ring offset from the outer ring inwards 0.06" then create a tool path cutting outside to a depth of 0.03" using the same 3/16" end mill.
Other options could include more wheel detail by adding another ring (SEE added tool paths and lower right tire and wheel) etc.

Here is a comparison between the 2.4" and 2" wheels and the relative size car bodies.
The larger car isn't too big and the size does allow for more 'realistic' detail, for a toy that is.
The wheels are cut from red maple and the cars are finished with Tung Oil.
Dale PS: for those that downloaded the 2" wheel with options, once cut, the option detail is too small to be of any appreciable value. Future car/truck designs may include Model A cars too. The wheel base is 3-1/2" longer but the tires and wheels are the same as the model T 21" wheel ( however, some years and Model A's did use a 19" wheel).

Sooner or later everyone gets results they can live with if they keep trying. Too much detail inside the 2" wheel didn't work so I eliminated some of the added 'options' then to simplify the process, reduced the number of bits to two. It takes longer to cut using a 1/8" end mill, the results are slightly less smooth in the axle pockets, but tolerable in such a small part.
The wheel in the photo is 2.0625" diameter but has a tread ring and a wheel rim. Now I'm satisfied with the result and though a 1/16" bigger it still fits inside the fenders.
I could have offset inward and left the tire size at 2" as well. Dale

Hi Dale,
I tried to download the programs in the above thread but it say your using Aspire 4.506? Are you using the beta version because I only have 4.015. I didn't think Vectric announced version 4.5 yet.
