Hand mirrors

They were made for my good friend who is giving them to his two grand daughters. The names are their "camp names" when they go to rendezvous. He suggested the theme for the graphics.

I have 4 to make for my grand daughters. Two will be monogrammed, one will have a turtle and the other will have some kind of animal, perhaps a raptor.

Thanks to Tim for the advice on holding them while carving and the material thickness.

In a couple of days I will add the files to the new thread for sharing as a way of saying "thank you" to everyone here who has answered dumb questions with patience and grace and encouraged me from the very first time I posted here.

Had to play around with the recess diameter to get it to '"just fit", not too big, not to small, just right!

Great work, Bud! I like the simple design... nice curves, nothing fancy. I was wondering if you were still going to post your files for this? I have a couple of people that I would love to do something like this for. As a new user to VCarve, there is so much to learn... sometimes it is easier to "borrow" someone else's design to be able to analyze it and see how it was done.

My pleasure. Nice to be able to give back to this forum.

The mirrors were a great hit at Christmas. I've made 11 so far and had to order more mirrors in order to be able to do more.

As suggested, I routed out a pocket in a piece of scrap wood that holds the mirror while I carve the back. Played around with the size to make it tight but not stuck. Put a piece of dental floss under while carving so I had a way to get them out.

When cutting the holder, I flipped the mirror first so if there was any difference it would fit correctly. The file with the semi-circle has already been flipped to fit in the pocket.

I first cut the pocket for the mirror glass, then cut the hand mirror from my stock. Next rounded over the edges on both sides on the router table. Sanded the edges, stained every where but the pocket, sprayed finish on it Then flipped them over, put on paint mask, put them in the holder and carved the letters/images. Sprayed black stencil ink in the carved area. Another coat of finish made the black shiny. Used bathroom caulking (3 dabs) to hold the mirror glass.

While the mirrors all came from the same place, there were slight variations in diameters. At first I cut the pocket at exactly 5" but some of them wouldn't go in the pocket. So I used the offset tool to make them slightly bigger.
