CRAGAR Mag Wheel

Post by ohiococonut »

There have been several post regarding toy cars lately and I thought "wouldn't it be cool to have the old style Cragar mag wheels from the 70's?"
So I sat down and after many hours of fiddling around with Aspire I came up with something I thought was befitting. Oh, the good ole days :D

Unlike many of you I run my cnc as one of my hobbies. I just like working with wood whether it be making pens, carvings, whatever. It's relaxing since I have no time line, although I have to answer to my wife.........sometimes  I have to make her things too to stay in her good graces.

These will fit the toy cars that Dale so graciously posted. The back is recessed for the spokes and the tire is contoured to match the front. The axle hole was sized for the axles I made on my lathe since I didn't want the large heads that usually comes with them. It's not evident in the picture but they are similar to the pegs you buy at a hobby store. I just didn't have any so I made them.

I finish cut these with a Beckwith 1/16" BN and then re-cut the spokes and lug-nuts with a 1/32" BN for more detail. The lug-nuts are less then .080" in size. The CRAGAR emblem in the center hub of the axle was engraved with a bit I made from a dull 1/4" bit. I sharpened it round then ground it down to form an engraving bit with about .001" tip. I just drilled a hole in a piece of pine to hold the axles upright while I engraved them.

They are only 3/4" x 2" and time consuming to make with my machine but the results are well worth my time. I think they're just cool as all get out!
I'm in the process of cutting the back wheels 1" thick so it'll look like 60's on the back and 70's on the front.

If anyone's interested in the file I'll see if I can post it.

Those are awesome! Any chance of getting an STL or OBJ or 3DS of that?

Ok, I'm back from my shop, just got done carving out more wheels.

I've cleaned up the file and deleted the clutter but left all of the elements so you can manipulate it any way you want.

Sorry I don't know how to save it in any other format. I've only been using Aspire for about a year.

Here's a screen shot of the file.

Need a little help attaching the file. I zipped it but it's right at 2MB and the limit is 2MB. It won't upload. Suggestions anyone?

I think I got it. I resized the image to 1". When you unzip it and open the file use the cursor and select the entire image then resize it back up to 2".
It worked for me.

If you do carve them out, show us your wheels! :D

Very nice. Now all you need to make it really complete is to carve "B F Goodrich RADIAL T/A " on the tires. :D

That should be easy enough to do and I actually thought of doing that but didn't want to seem partial to any one brand

What I plan on doing next is designing a suitable car. Gotta love Aspire!
