Tooling advice

Post by MillAlien »

Any advice on tool selection for Design & Make models? I'm reviewing by tool line-up as I get ready to cut a bunch of models.

What I have in-stock now is:

- 5.4 Deg Tapered Angle Ball Tip 1/16 Dia x 1/32 Radius x 1 x 1/4 Shank x 3 Inch Long x 4 Flute Up-Cut
- 1 Deg Tapered Angle Ball Tip 1/8 Dia x 1/16 Radius x 1-1/2 x 1/4 Shank x 3 Inch Long x 3 Flute Up-Cut Spiral
- Up-Cut Ball Nose Spiral 1/8 Dia x 1/2 Inch x 1/4 Shank
- Up-Cut Ball Nose Spiral 1/4 Dia x 1 Inch x 1/4 Shank
- Up-Cut Ball Nose Spiral 1/2 Dia x 2-1/8 Inch x 1/2 Shank
- Up-Cut Spiral Ball Nose 1/16 Radius x 1/8 Dia x 1/2 x 1/4 Shank x 3 Inch Long x 2 Flute

Looks like a decent mix to me.

On the first tool on your list - 4 flute? I would try to stay away from anything with more than 3 flutes.

Reason is, in order to get any decent chipload the chips will tend to clog the gullets (space between the flutes) and block chip evacuation, especially on the tip where most of the cutting is happening.
Imagine the Possibilities of a Creative mind, combined with the functionality of CNC
