Re: Question about sanding top immediately after carving?

After carving I applied sanding sealer and let it dry. I then applied stain. It is taking a LONG time for stain to dry. Am i supposed to sand after applying sanding sealer and before appling stain?

Thanks

Hi Kristen,

What product did you use for the Sealer?

What product (brand and name of stain) did you you use to apply over the sealer?

I always sand after every coat. Especially after the sanding sealer. Usually with 400 grit sandpaper and/or 0000 steel wool. It makes the finish a lot smoother.

Me too, Steve. I mention that in all the PDF tutorials of the free Vectric projects in the “Finishing” section.

Also, I often mention applying light coats of Krylon Gloss and then Krylon Satin or Flat over the prior sealed (and/or painted) surface before applying a glaze/stain.

I don’t usually use steel wool at that stage, due to tiny metal particles sluffing off and possibly becoming embedded into the underlying finish. Especially important to avoid if applying a water-based glaze or clear finish afterwards.

The white ScotchBright pads are a pretty good substitute for my 0000 steel wool in those cases.

I used General Finishes Enduro Sanding Sealer.
Let dry.
Then put on Watco Danish Oil Medium walnut for the stain over the dried sanding sealer.
I did that yesterday.
Its still tacky, so am not sanding yet.

Was I supposed to sand after putting on the sanding sealer and before the stain?
Where are these tutorials on "Finishing"?

Hi Kristen,

That sealer is water-based and I would not recommend it. Best sealer I’ve found over the years is the 50/50 mix of Zinnser Bulls Eye SealCoat and Denatured alcohol. Because the Zinnser SealCoat is nothing more than a high-quality clear de-waxed shellac, it is superb for sealing (thinned and or full-strength depending on the project) as well as a finish coat for many indoor projects (at full strength).

You have applied an oil-based product over a water-based product. Sometimes that works out well (letting the water-based product cure for a week), and sometimes not so well. Yes, light sanding will be necessary. Especially due to the water-based sealer use.

I think you might be OK if you set it aside for a week in the hope that the stain will dry out enough to proceed. Lots of variables, such as temperature and humidity and whether the stain has enough “dryer chemicals” in its formulation to allow a full dry now.

Others may offer opinions and their experience that might be helpful.

California, in all it's great wisdom  has outlawed the sale of Denatured Alcohol. I understand it's the same in at least parts of Canada. I found this out when I went to buy another gallon of the stuff. I bought a couple of quarts of Mohawk Shellac Reducer, but the stuff is really expensive. I bought some General Finishes Enduro Sanding Sealer, but haven't tried it much. I didn't think of the water factor.

Is there a replacement for DNA for thinning SealCoat?

I buy Everclear by the case and pay HazMat shipping. Fortunately French polishing make a lttle shellac go a long way.
