What Woods Work Best for PhotoVCarve?

Post by GollyRojer »

The subject says it. I figured this had been asked before now, but didn't find anything by searching.
Pine is out, in my opinion. Probably cedar and other softwoods, too. I had thought Maple would work well, and it has a few times, but I've had problems with contrast in dark and light. I put sealer and stain on it, which helped some, but I concluded that there surely must be a wood that is naturally more suited for photovcarving. Experienced photovcarvers, what are your preferred woods?

I should mention that I just started doing photovcarving when Aspire 10 added it as a toolpath, and that's the software I'm using.

I have used hard maple. After carving, I sealed with a coat of poly, then painted the entire surface with black acrylic. After that dried, I sanded off the excess paint.

I have used maple, poplar and pine or ash when that is what the customer wanted.
