First project on the Laguna IQ
While I wait to get my 4th axis working correctly I thought I'd tackle another project I had in mind that didn't require the 4th axis. It's small, about 4" long made from MDF for now, planning on a solid wood one. But all the programs work!

Interesting project. How thick was the MDF before carving? And how did you use hold downs on that? Perhaps a little summary of setup and carving the project? Thanks.

Re: First project on the Laguna IQ
Any advice on how to make this? I need to make a bunch of these and have decided to use my CNC.
It looks very similar in design to the baseball cap! I am using Vcarve Pro and was hoping to stick with vcarve if possible. Let me know if you have any advice? I am relatively mew to using Vcarve for 3d- modeling.

Re: First project on the Laguna IQ
I always find myself gravitating to the complicated stuff.. lol
I did this hat with a two sided setup.
The MDF was three pieces glued together to make the 2.5' Thickness I needed.
This thing is very fragile right now, I used the MDF just to prove out my programs.
I used two programs for the inside, MrOrange you may want to use and additional finishing pass on the inside of your cup.
First was a roughing pass, followed by a drill cycle to put two locating holes in the MDF for reference pins to locate the other side.
I then used the hole drilling pattern for the outside to drill the two matching holes into my waste board. Using some double sided tape and two 1/4" dowel pins I flipped my hat over and stuck it to the waste board. Secured it with a couple blocks of wood screwed to the waste board and bam!
I ran the rouging pass on the outside, followed by the finish pass. I then cut out the profile with a couple tabs to hold it in.
All in all it's 6 separate tool paths, two for the inside and 4 for the outside of the hat.
Need longer tools if you want to make it any bigger. I am considering making the roughing pass on the outside a "Material Boundary" pass so that more of the block of material is removed to avoid any tooling bumps.
thanks for checking it out.

Re: First project on the Laguna IQ
Hi Mr. Orange,
I would mill it in 3 steps:
first - Mill the bottom the bowl (rough and finish) and add a flat at the top and do not part from the waste material.
second - Make a holder. Mill a negative of the bottom of the bowl all the way down flat to the top
third - place the bottom in the negative holder (hot glue) and mill the top (rough and finish) and cut away all the waste material.
Any thoughts from the others on how they would do it?
Thanks,
Jim

This demonstrates the problem with cross-posting. In the original thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=38251&sid=7770af9aa ... 0e4#unread the question was "how to model it" not "how to cut it".

That's wild, I actually never saw his post about the Modeling? Guess I'm not familiar with "Cross Posting"? I did not Model this, i grabbed a free Ball Cap stl file online and created tool paths.adze_cnc wrote: ↑Thu Sep 02, 2021 5:19 pmThis demonstrates the problem with cross-posting. Thanks for the info, it was helpful. Yes, I am looking into the designing aspect but still helpful info for machining.
