Cut from Red Oak. This was my first double-sided project. It was very straightforward after watching the Vectric tutorial on two-sided machining. The thumb holds were made with a "floating" fluted toolpath where the vector was half the width of the router bit used to cut.

I'm sorry, Ken, I'm having trouble visualizing that thumb hold cut. Perhaps if I knew what bit you did use on it?ken.gentry wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 7:03 pm... The thumb holds were made with a "floating" fluted toolpath where the vector was half the width of the router bit used to cut.
I really like your case. It would make a very nice gift.

Re: Playing Card Box
Nice project!!! Lots of things here to take in.
The thumb holes are a great use of the fluting toolpath!!! Well thought out. Also, the use of colors in the 3D toolpath preview really helps to show off your idea of the flocking inside.
Well done... and as your first double-sided project... "ACE" would be the word I would use! See what I did there...

Re: Playing Card Box
I couldn't think of a better term that "floating" for the thumb holes. I drew a line vector the length of the thumb hole and about 1/8" from the sides of the box. Then applied a simple fluting toolpath to these lines so that the 1/4" router bit (4 flute downcut end mill) would remove some of the side of the box.
I highlighted the line vectors for the fluting toolpaths.

From what I understand the fluting toolpath is using "Flute Type": Ramp at Start and End ; "Ramp Type": Smooth.Tex_Lawrence wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 2:16 amI'm sorry, Ken, I'm having trouble visualizing that thumb hold cut. Perhaps if I knew what bit you did use on it?

Well, you said fluting toolpath, but I suppose I was mesmerized by the floating nature of it! Thanks to adze_cnc for the example file, too! I wasn't understanding how the flat end mill was making that contoured edge. Makes sense now.

Re: Playing Card Box
The original post might be done with a ball-end cutter. I like the flat spot at the apex of the indentation to allow a more positive purchase for the thumb. That and it only requires one cutter to effect both the fluting and profile toolpaths.
