I just delivered these paired and matched boxes to a repeat customer. She is planning ahead, to make things easier for her two sons when the time comes. I had earlier made a pair of "booze boxes" for her to present as Christmas presents.
The Maple grain runs consistently around the perimeter of the pair, cut from a single board. The joinery is courtesy of Tailmaker's "Tailmaker" software. The internal rabbets and magnet holes, as well as the bevels, are all designed in VCarve Pro. The top and bottom bevels are done on a router table. The locking mechanism is a set of matched 1/4" magnets. When the boxes are paired according to the Ebony alignment pins, the magnets mutually attract, allowing the tops to be lifted. Once the tops are pushed back down and the boxes separated, embedded adjustment screws in the tops pull the magnets in, locking the tops. Alignments and displacements are rather critical!
The finish is 4 coats of Livos Natural Oil, with tinting by artist's oil colours in Ebony Black and Burnt Umber. That really brought out the V-carved inscription.

It's not done, but the plumbing parts I need are somewhere in Amazon limbo. Total machine time was about 22 hours, of which the 3D Drive Rail wall and the 3D finish were about 11. I'm glad I didn't record my non-machine time, it must be pushing 100 hours. A lot of that was thinking about how to do things. The original image file is courtesy of NASA's BMDO "Clementine" mission. I used the must-not-be-named "360" product to turn that image into an STL, which I then further processed in VCarve Pro. I thought I would need Aspire (played with the trial) but VCarve ended up doing everything I needed.
The entire process to date is explained in the blog entries noted above.
