Burnt leaf bowl

Post by mrmfwilson »

I may have posted one of these before. I take cut offs of the 2x10 and 2x12 pine from the construction sites in our neighborhood. Trying to save the world I guess. It's incredible to me how much lumber and other usable material is getting thrown away from housing development. This one I modeled in Sketchup and used an stl in Vcarve. The original model is stretched horizontally. Originally I made them from Cut 3D files before you could import stls into Vcarve. It's about 8 x 18" cut from a 2x10. It has varying thicknesses that make it somewhat of a challenge to burn but the texture is amazing. I scrape the burnt surfaces off with a steel brush. Although I've recently found that a wet rag works best. The soft part of the grain is removed and the harder parts form a really unique texture. Sold a few of these and people love them. Fun experiments.

I don't quite get what you carved out of 2X material. The top material looks like lacewood. Did you cut it out to inset the Leaf carving?

I’m in the same boat. More photos please! As that old Louisiana guy said, “There’s an optical colusion going on here!” 😃

The leaf is carved from the 2x. It is sitting on a lace wood and walnut table that I built a while ago. Thought the table made a nice contrasting background.

Yes it is a two sided carving. I never notice the optical illusion that the picture has. It is one of those inside/outside illusions.
