fraction to decimal chart

Post by jimandi5000 »

Hello All,

I just made this and was thinking you all may want to make one in your shop.

It is 0.5 x 20 x 30 MDF.

Have a look.

Jim, when you add too many decimal places, sometimes you introduce a problem.

For instance, "1/2 = 0.500000 - 12.7001" or "1 = 1.000000 - 25.4001". There are others. Looks like your data source rounded up occationally.

Yes, I'm being pedantic, but you put it out there for all to see! :D

It looks like its a well made chart. +1 I've been needing one while converting a couple of projects from Imperial to metric.

Here's a PDF file that I keep on my desktop, that I posted a couple of times. I refer to it constantly.

1 inch has been equal to 25.4 mm exactly my whole life. Has climate change caused it to grow another 0.0001 mm?

Hi all, i found an error in the excel sheet. It was adding a rounding up error. I will repost the files.
Thanks,
Jim

Pedantic crisis averted! I'm liking it more!

I would be using my 30 deg. engraving bit and a single line font. Then I would duplicate toolpaths and add 0.001" or 0.002" to the depth each time. Maybe two cleanup passes depending on what wood you're using.

Those letters are going to be difficult to clean otherwise, and there's a LOT of them. :D

Just carved one for my shop. Thanks for all the work you put into this. Not sure that I would have gone to all of the trouble if you hadn't done all the hard stuff. Did it simple with 1/4 inch plywood. Carved with 60 degree V Pencil Point bit. Looks great.

Good to hear you made one. I have made about 10 of them as gifts. I used Timbermate Walnut Hardwood Wood filler to make the letters pop.

What a great solution to make the numbers and letters pop. I have always just masked and painted followed by lots and lots of sanding. I'll look for the filler and try it the next time I carve anything like this.

If you use a dark wood filler (or stain) to make the letters "pop", don't use cherry for the base material. After a few years of exposure to light it gets quite dark and the contrast will be lost. Don't ask. :)

Along with what FixItMike says  and while sanding off the wood filler, don't forget that you did all of this on a scrap piece of cheap plywood.

It doesn't have much of a top veneer. Oops!

FYI... The Timbermate filler, it also comes in white. :)
Thanks,
