I have been wanting to make a full sized sculpture but with lumber prices the way they are I had to settle for a head. Made from 3/16" plywood and 60 to 70 slices. It's a pretty accurate rendition of my Son, The process isn't easy or quick. But the results are really satisfying. If anyone is interested in the steps I would be glad to help them give it a try. Many programs are used and all are free or trial based free.
3D Photo capture - MeshRoom
3D Editing of mesh - MeshLab
3D Sculpting - Mudroom
3D Slicing - Houdini Apprentice
.... and finally VCarvePro.
The process comes down to making traceable bitmaps(with registration marks) of each slice that plays in a sequence very much like the slicing you see of a full MRI. Then carefully ordering your outlines so you know the sequence.
Dimensions are about 20" high. "Resolution" dependent on slice thickness.
I look forward to seeing what you all create!!!!!!

Re: 3D Head
Thanks for sharing this. I've also been contemplating a sculpture, doing it in VCarve to avoid the expense (and learning curve) of a 3D printer. Your sculpture proves I'm not crazy to try this approach. But I don't know if I have your patience!

Re: 3D Head
A few years ago I invested several thousand dollars in a David-Vision 3D scanner, that I thought took crappy scans and I had to do a lot of editing and cleanup in ZBrush. I finally sold it for a fraction of what I paid for because I was so dissatisfied. It looks like your approach came out great without a lot of cash layout.
Here are two of one of my granddaughters, the color one 3D printed and the other was done in wood using Aspire using the same scan.
