Rustic Xmas

Post by jay pieper »

My daughter and her family moved to Minnesota last year. My wife informed me
that her and the kids were missing the Homestead farm here in Wisconsin. So dad
went to his lumber stash up in the old dairy barn to find the wood I wanted to use
for the Christmas present for my daughter.

First was the old barn board for the background, a piece of oak barn beam for the
inlay of the two states, and some redwood from an old wooden silo to make the
frame around the sign.

I did a flattening pass on the barn board, but just enough to level it a bit wanted to
keep as much of the old weathered look as I could.(even left tool marks in).
Went to the bandsaw and sliced of two pieces from the 6X8 oak bar beam to make
the two inlays for the states. To frame it out I ripped down the redwood silo slats.
This should help bring a little bit of home for the Holidays.

Thanks for taking a look
Jay

What a phenomenal and beautifully made keepsake! Just gorgeous work.
Is it just me or does the spacing between the two states resemble the profile of a person?
Which, imho, makes it even more special......

Thanks guys for the nice words on my Christmas
project.
Joe---It's ironic that you saw the profile in the river
between the two states. I never really noticed that
before. When I finished the sign I sent a picture to
my long time high school friend who just happens
to be an enrolled member of one of the native tribes
here. His text back to me was "I never noticed the
Indian head profile between the states on the river
before." I think this showed up when I moved the
States apart to make the river more noticeable.

A surprise unintended "bonus"...you gotta love that! Truly a well done piece. Thanks for sharing.
