Winter Swirly thing

Post by Bob Jr »

This is another project that I will use with my group of home schooled students. It will be taught virtually through Zoom. The only tools needed are a narrow bladed saw, glue, and sand paper. It is an activity designed for young woodworkers.
This was also my first attempt to see if I could use a compression bit.
I made the parts in 12" by 10.5" by 1/4" thick panels. The cut panels are then delivered to students by the parent coordinator.
I'll include the crv file in case you would like to try this project. Since I designed it to meet my requirements, it may not work the same for you. So, use your judgment and be sure you understand what's going on before cutting this. Make changes as needed.
Different shapes could be designed for different occasions.
Have fun,
Bob

Thanks for the project. I hope to make these to give to some children to assemble.

You're welcome Jim.
You might want to consider relocating the tabs that are currently at the base of the tree, snowman, and gingerbread man. They are in locations that may cause problems when removing them. Otherwise, the portion that is used for gluing the figures to the snowflake might be removed by mistake.

What a clever little project, Bob. I admire your willingness to share your time and talent with youngsters. You just never know the skill talent someone may develop because of your influence. Kudos to you, sir!

Bob, thank you for the file. My grandson is giving one to his teacher for her desk. Someone at his school will use it for an art project and add some details to the figures.

I made a small change to make the operation a little smoother and rundown a little longer. I moved the bottom string holes out to the edge of the snowflake.

Actually, I made a video of rundown after windup, and it was three minutes long! The teacher will be able to use it to time their "timeout" period! :D

Just to document a change.

We did exchange the fishing line for a sewing thread/string with a gold-looking thread wound with white thread. It doesn't wind up with as much force, fit much nicer to the look they wanted and was so much easier to work with than the fishing line!

Kids are playing with it all day as they walk by. +1
