Zank Inlay: 9"x15" Oval Tray series

Post by laflippin »

This Japanese floral pattern and symbol are inlaid into a one-piece, 1" deep red oak tray. Blossoms are purpleheart, leaves are poplar, twigs are walnut, and the symbol is yellowheart.

Thank you for the very kind words. Thought I'd also pass along a minor tip for others who do a lot of Zank Inlay projects...a year ago or so FixitMike inspired me to purchase a set of dental tools to use for cleaning up the 'fuzzies' that can often get in the way of a good inlay glue-up. Some woods are bigger culprits than others, but basically every Zank project can benefit from 'fuzzies' removal. Standard dental tools work well for this purpose, but the tool I'm now using most often didn't actually come with the standard set of picks and pokers. For about $15 one can separately buy a "dental bone file"--a double-ended stainless steel tool with two small rasps for filing. IMO it's the perfect tool for cleaning up delicate male inlay pieces and/or fuzzies-laden female workpieces.

That is just beautiful! Thanks for tip on the dental tool. I've had great success using the standard ones but Im anxious to look into the one you mention.

Thanks, Joe. The exact tool I got was: Pomee USA 702-210 Miller Bone File #21 ($14.50 on Amazon).
