Routing note pads

Post by Bob Jr »

One of my "to do" projects has been playing with the idea of routing silhouettes into note pads. I have also been using stencil fonts to cut names into the pads. To protect the top and bottom of the note pads while machining, I use two spoil boards. Here's the result of my research:

And, since I live in Wisconsin:

I like to machine the pads with the cardboard side up. This way the cardboard provides better support when using an up-cut bit. I cut a pocket of the object in the top spoil board, and use a profile cut for the pad. It speeds up the operation. So far, I have successfully done this with three pads stacked together at once.
Here's a cheese, spoilboard sandwich that sort of shows how I do the procedure:

Thank you for the comments.
I used a 1/8" diameter upcut endmill. And, the same feeds and speeds I use for wood.

That is just....so cool! What an ingenious idea. Thanks for sharing the details. I want to try this sometime (most likely after tax season).
